As a significant portion of the research arm of Utah State University, the growing Space Dynamics Lab was in need of a more walkable, user friendly space at the heart of its campus. Utilizing the same storm water routing as an existing pond, a new high walled pond was dug. This new design from J-U-B Engineering incorporates sitting walls, a pond shelf filled with semi aquatic plantings, an updated irrigation system, and an accessible sediment pond to lengthen the lifespan of the main pond. Great care was taken by subcontractors to not damage existing trees, some of which are the only species known to be growing in area, as well as a picturesque crab apple tree that SDL employees are fond of sitting underneath during their breaks of lunch. We also laid new sidewalks around the pond that connect to existing sidewalks throughout the campus and new ADA accessible crosswalks to make the area easier to enjoy for everyone. Shortly after completion, the local duck population found their way back to the water and can be seen foraging or resting in the area.
